Leeds United’s Gabriel Gudmundsson says he isn’t thinking about becoming Sweden’s captain anytime soon, wanting to skip the country’s curse.

The 26-year-old left Lille for Leeds in July and started in every Premier League match this season.

His Leeds United form has helped him retain his place in the national side for September and the ongoing international break.

Fotboll Direkt interviewed the 26-year-old to discuss some topics around the Sweden camp.

Earlier this week, Sweden manager Jon Dahl Tomasson talked about the “curse” of his captains being injured repeatedly. He cited Aston Villa defender Victor Lindelöf, Tottenham Hotspur’s Dejan Kulusevski and Liverpool’s Alexander Isak as examples.

Kulusevski has been sidelined since May and is expected to return to the pitch later this year. The Leeds left-back laughed when talking about out the captain’s curse mentioned by Jon Dahl Tomasson.

“I stay away from it, so I don’t get hurt,” he said.

The fullback made his debut for Sweden in 2022 and played 17 matches so far. Fotboll Direkt asked whether he would like to have the armband if not for the curse.
