Lionel Messi leads Barcelona rout of Huesca after visitors strike first

Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez each scored twice as Barcelona moved top of La Liga after routing Huesca 8-2 at Camp Nou. Ernesto Valverde’s side extended their 100% league record this season and knocked Real Madrid off top spot on goal difference, despite their opponents taking a shock lead.

Despite the huge margin of victory Valverde was unhappy to have conceded twice to the newly promoted visitors. “I’m happy because we created many chances but I’m not satisfied with the two goals conceded,” he said.

“We had patience and dominated the game and eight goals are the product of the plays we generated.”

Huesca opened the scoring through Cucho Hernández in the third minute and made a real fight of the first half, going in only 3-2 behind.

After Hernández’s close-range opener Messi equalised brilliantly before Jorge Pulido turned Jordi Alba’s cross into his own net. Suárez then scored his first of the night from another Alba cross, following referral to the video assistant referee.

Alex Gallar pulled a goal back for the La Liga newcomers just before half-time from Moi Gómez’s cut-back, but in the second half the floodgates opened.

Ousmane Dembélé scored from a narrow angle in the 48th minute and Ivan Rakitic finished from Messi’s lofted through-ball four minutes later. Messi then scored his second from Philippe Coutinho’s pass on the hour.

After Alba scored the seventh from another defence-splitting Messi pass, Suárez was brought down in the penalty area by the goalkeeper Axel Werner in stoppage time. The Uruguayan offered the spot-kick to Messi, who was on a hat-trick, but he declined and Suárez duly added the eighth.

Elsewhere in La Liga Real Betis won the Seville derby thanks to Joaquin’s 80th-minute header. The 37-year-old substitute headed in Aissa Mandi’s cross at the far post to spark delirious celebrations among the home fans.

Sampdoria bring Napoli back down to earth

Carlo Ancelotti’s strong start as Napoli manager came to an abrupt end as his team lost 3-0 at Sampdoria. The French striker Gregoire Defrel, on loan from Roma, scored twice in the first half to put the hosts in control before the former Napoli player Fabio Quagliarella sealed victory with a brilliant backheeled volley. Napoli had begun the Serie A season with two wins but now drop to fifth in the table.

Sassuolo moved up to second after a dramatic 5-3 home victory over Genoa. Krzysztof Piatek put the visitors ahead but the hosts rallied spectacularly, scoring four goals in 12 minutes before half-time through Kevin-Prince Boateng, Pol Lirola, Khouma Babacar and a Nicolas Spolli own goal.

Gianmarco Ferrari made it five after an hour before Genoa kept things interesting with late goals from Goran Pandev and Piatek.

Sassuolo are joined in the top three by Fiorentina, who beat Udinese 1-0 thanks to Marco Benassi’s winner 15 minutes from time. Torino ended Spal’s unbeaten start with a 1-0 win that was suspended due to torrential rain in Turin.
