Rangers: Alaves stance emerges on Hagi summer transfer

Rangers loanee Ianis Hagi is unlikely to return to Alaves again next season after a disappointing season on loan with the La Liga side this term, according to Inigo Minon.

The El Correo journalist told Chris Jack and the Rangers Review on Monday (26 February) that the chances of the Romanian international returning to Spain next season are minimal after a slow start to life with Alaves this term.

Any deal which would see him extend his stay with Alaves beyond the end of the season would come as a surprise as the 25-year-old’s displays this term haven’t “earned” him a permanent move away from Ibrox.

Hagi will more than likely head to Euro 2024 as a Rangers player but following this summer’s tournament, it remains unclear where and for whom he will be plying his trade for.

It came as a bit of a shock to some Rangers supporters when Micahel Beale decided to send Hagi packing in the final weeks of the summer transfer window, especially after the Romanian impressed in his limited minutes.

Many fans were pining for the 25-year-old to make a premature return to Ibrox during the January transfer window as they believed Hagi would add an element of creativity and drive in the midfield that had been missing.

Philippe Clement has overseen an excellent turnaround at Rangers.

But only a few months later, it seems unclear whether or not the Romanian will play for Rangers again as his future remains undecided. A permanent move to La Liga appears to be off the cards already and Philippe Clement may not need him next season.

Tom Lawrence and Todd Cantwell have impressed under the Belgian this term and when fit, they will almost certainly be Clement’s preferred attacking midfield options. That makes it incredibly hard for Hagi to force his way into the starting XI on a regular basis.

A lot could change over the next few weeks and months, but at the moment, it’s hard to see where Hagi’s future lies.
