Asmir Begovic is leading the race to be Leicester City’s stand-in goalkeeper as Fran Vieites waits for his club debut.

Veteran keeper Begovic, 38, became the fourth oldest debutant in City’s history on Tuesday, behind Mark Schwarzer, Kevin Phillips and Chris Powell, when he replaced the injured Jakub Stolarczyk.

With City’s number one ruled out of at least this weekend’s trip to Norwich with a groin injury, Begovic is on course to make his first start for the club.

It seems he is preferred to fellow new recruit Vieites, who is set to make a matchday squad for the first time, but only as a substitute.

It had been widely assumed that Vieites would be Stolarczyk’s back-up when he arrived as a free agent in mid-September.

The Spaniard was number two for La Liga side Real Betis last season, and played in all of their Europa Conference League knockout matches, bar the final, as they finished runners-up to Chelsea.
