Steven Gerrard is the favourite to replace Russell Martin as Rangers manager. The former Liverpool captain emerged as the leading contender to succeed Martin after he was sacked on Sunday evening.

Martin's final match was the 1-1 draw at Falkirk on Sunday, following which he was given a police escort away from the stadium after fans tried to stop the team bus from leaving. The Rangers board had been reluctant to part with Martin, who was only hired in June, but after just one win from seven in the Scottish Premiership, Champions League misery and a winless Europa League start, the 39-year-old’s position became untenable.

Gerrard remains a hero to many Rangers supporters after leading the club to the Scottish title for the 55th time in May 2021, and Jason McAteer would like to see his former Liverpool team-mate return to Ibrox.
