La Liga star makes contract decision after Chelsea, Liverpool interest

HITC understands that Danish goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen rebuffed interest from a number of European clubs, including from Premier League, to sign an extension with Villarreal.

Villarreal lost a host of key players last summer as Samuel Chukwueze, Pau Torres and Nicolas Jackson all left the club.

An up-and-down campaign saw Villarreal finish eighth as four managers took charge of the La Liga side.

That means Villarreal have missed out on a European spot and there could be more sales to come this summer.

Alex Baena is attracting interest and Yeremy Pino has previously been linked with Premier League transfers.

The main attraction at Villarreal this summer has been goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen.

The Swedish-born stopper – who has chosen to play for Denmark – is regarded as one of Europe’s top young goalkeepers.

Jorgensen had previously been on the books with Malmo and Mallorca before joining the Villarreal ranks in 2017.

A 6ft 3in stopper, Jorgensen has impressed in La Liga and HITC can reveal that Villarreal were fearful that they could lose him this summer.

We can confirm that Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Liverpool – who are in the goalkeeper market – all showed varying level of interest in the 22-year-old this summer.

Serie A Inter Milan were also very keen but the Yellow Submarines have now persuaded Jorgensen to commit his immediate future to them.

Jorgensen has signed a new deal until 2029 with Villarreal confirming his decision to stay.

Those clubs who have been eyeing Jorgensen will now look elsewhere and Newcastle United appear to have their alternative lined up.

HITC understands that Newcastle have made a move to sign Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford following their relegation to the Championship.

Trafford has been axed from England’s Euro 2024 squad but the Magpies have picked him out as the ideal competition for Nick Pope.

Liverpool are looking for another stopper in case Caoimhin Kelleher leaves this summer.

HITC understands that Celtic are interested but the Reds will demand at least £15million – a price which could rule the Bhoys out.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are also keen on Kelleher, who has been Alisson’s deputy at Anfield.

Chelsea signed two stoppers last summer as Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic arrived but Enzo Maresca signed a Danish goalkeeper at Leicester City summer, landing Mads Hermansen.

New Blues boss Maresca may have wanted to repeat the trick but Jorgensen is staying put.

Arsenal are also keeping an eye on the market amid questions over Aaron Ramsdale’s future, but will have to find another target with Jorgensen not moving this summer.
