Coffee with the Caps, Monday April 29

Good Monday morning Caps fans, hope you all are gearing up for a big week for the Canucks and for May flowers, assuming the April showers don’t linger.

The Caps were rewarded for their cross country road trip with a point on Saturday, drawing 1-1 against a resurgent New York Red Bulls in a decent result, albeit one both sides will probably feel could have (or should have) ended in them claiming all three points.

Vancouver hung on for dear life a bit in the first part of the second half and were duly punished by Lewis Morgan, who was denied twice in the early seconds of the match by Yohei Takaoka. They also couldn’t muster much of anything to seize the final 15 minutes of the match after a pretty comical red card from Noah Eile left New York with 10 men. Indeed, at times it seemed like the home side were up a man.

No one will fault the end result, however, given where the Red Bulls sit in the table. And the match was still a major victory, if only to commemorate the arrival of Brian White in Vancouver.

The last time these two teams played, it was White scoring against the Caps so it seemed fitting that he would mark his return to Red Bull Arena by tallying against his old team. The goal also lifted White to sole possession of the Caps’ MLS era scoring crown, an impressive achievement.

In an era of high-price, DP striker signings (such as, say, Lucas Cavallini), the fact that the Caps got their man for $400,000 in GAM is all the more impressive and will go down as one of the most shrewd trades in the modern history of the league and certainly the best trade the Whitecaps have ever made. The fact that, until this year, the Red Bulls have struggled to find a consistent scorer makes it all the more glaring.

So while it was a good weekend for the entire team (an Austin FC victory pegged back the LA Galaxy and did the Caps a favor), this one is for you Brian — here’s to 44 more goals in Vancouver.
