Gareth Southgate hints Man Utd ace Kobbie Mainoo could have new England position

Manchester United sensation Kobbie Mainoo is already being tipped for a positional tweak by Gareth Southgate.

The Red Devils youngster has burst onto the scene as a new vital cog at the base of Erik ten Hag's midfield in recent months. But England chief Southgate has hinted the 18-year-old - who is also being targeted by Ghana's national team - may put his talents to use further upfield in future.

United academy graduate Mainoo was voted the club's Player of the Month for January before slotting home a cool decider in the recent 4-3 win at Wolves. And his displays of late appear to have convinced Southgate his talents may be wasted playing deep.

Southgate told TNT Sports after the recent UEFA Nations League draw: “He’s doing brilliantly. I’m not certain he’s necessarily going to be a defensive midfielder, as such. He’s quite a progressive player but he’s had a fabulous start to his career, and it will be good to monitor him as we go forward."

Mainoo has timed his emergence to perfection as he goes about earning a place in the Three Lions squad ahead of Euro 2024. The youngster wrapped up his January by contributing in a 4-2 FA Cup win over Newport County and has continued to impress since then.

Although traditionally a defensive midfielder thus far in his career, it wouldn't be new for Mainoo to be pushed forward in future. He impressed for United's under-21 team as an attacking midfielder at points last season and lined up as a makeshift frontman on at least one occasion, assisting Marc Jurado in a 1-1 draw against Tottenham's youth.

That being said, competition at the base of midfield may be more accommodating for England. The likes of Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, James Maddison and Eberechi Eze have already stocked the national team around the No. 10 role, while Jordan Henderson may soon be phased out of the squad.

One thing for certain is Mainoo is pulling all the right moves to gain recognition for his would-be England boss. And Southgate already appears to be drawing up plans in his head for how he might put the prodigy to use once he's a fully fledged international.
