Halliday slams Silva for 'laughable' Rangers moment v Kilmarnock

Rangers forward Fabio Silva has been torn into by Andy Halliday for his “laughable” celebration in the Gers’ win over Kilmarnock.

Philippe Clement’s side moved back within touching distance of Celtic with a 4-1 win at Ibrox on Sunday (5 May) with goals from Silva, Ben Davies, Tom Lawrence and John Souttar proving to be the difference between the sides.

The Light Blues had fallen behind early in the contest before Silva levelled things up on the stroke of halftime before making a speaking gesture towards the home crowd, which Halliday labelled “needless”.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on Monday (6 May) he said: “It is almost getting to the point where I feel like I am picking on him but I am going Fabio Silva. I think I gave him it last week for his tap-in when he ended up falling, but I just don’t get that celebration at all.

“I think it’s needless and it was an equaliser as well – your first thought should be to get the ball back to the spot and get a second. I know it was very close to half-time, but that reaction was really poor.

“I think as footballers we have our critics, but at times we are our own biggest critics. I don’t think Fabio Silva can feel himself that he has done enough over the last few games, so to have a dig at the fans is really poor.”

When the celebration was brought up later in the programme, Halliday branded it “laughable”.

As Halliday suggests, it feels as though Silva is getting unfairly targeted by supporters and pundits alike at the moment, but it is hard to argue that the Portuguese forward isn’t exacerbating things with his actions.

Following his comical dives against Celtic which saw him labelled a cheat and his fall to the floor in the Scottish Cup semi-final with Hearts he has quite quickly become the but of a lot of Rangers-based jokes.

The Wolves loanee was signed to add an extra edge at the top end of the field and while he has managed to score a couple of goals, he has primarily been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons since arriving at Ibrox.

It doesn’t seem likely the Gers will even try to make his loan spell permanent before the end of the season and you have to think that would be the best decision for all parties involved.
