Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Jake Turner has joined Gillingham on a free transfer. He becomes the second goalkeeper that the Gills’ have signed this week following the arrival of loan signing Ashley Maynard-Brewer from Charlton Athletic.
Turner was released by the Magpies last month without a single senior appearance to his name. He played 23 times for the under-23 side – conceding 43 goals and registering six clean sheets.
The goalkeeper revealed in 2019 that he was persuaded to join the Magpies by the club's former winger Sammy Ameobi.
The 23-year-old joined Newcastle from Bolton Wanderers in 2019 and has had stints on loan in League Two with Morecambe and Colchester United respectively.
Gillingham were relegated from League One last season, with defeat against Rotherham United on the final day of the season confirming their fate. The length of Turner’s contract has not been specified.
