Monday’s print edition (1/6/24) of Spanish newspaper ABC de Sevilla report that Tottenham are in ‘continuous’ talks with Real Betis over the potential transfer of Lo Celso this summer.

The report claims that the Real Betis hierarchy would like to bring Lo Celso back to the club, with the midfielder having spent an impressive season there before his move to Tottenham back in 2019.

Talks between Betis and Tottenham have reportedly been ‘continuous and always remained open’ this summer, with Manuel Pellegrini also liking the Argentine midfielder.

Betis allegedly tried to sign Lo Celso in 2023 but his salary was simply too high. It remains to be seen whether that would be a problem again this summer.

The La Liga side are trying to sell some of their players on high wages over the next two months, including Nabil Fekir, William Carvalho and Willian José, which could free up some room to pay Lo Celso.

Of course, this kind of process may take a while for Betis to actually pull off, but Lo Celso is currently focused on competing for Argentina at the Copa America in the USA.

When asked about the rumoured interest in Lo Celso, Real Betis president Angel Haro said last week (via Estadio Deportivo): “It is recurring every summer that Lo Celso’s name appears, because we remember the good year he had here.

“However, now there is no proposal or offer. I like him, but there is nothing (so far).”

These comments came despite a report from El Mira which stated that Betis had already held ‘official meetings’ with Spurs over a potential deal for Lo Celso.

Spurs Web Opinion:

I can see Lo Celso heading back to La Liga this summer, but I don’t suppose Tottenham will get much of a price. The other leagues don’t have as much money to throw around at the moment, so £15m is probably the maximum Tottenham would get.

That’s a real shame because Lo Celso should actually be worth double that fee. He is a very talented player and could well have a successful Copa America campaign with Argentina this summer.
