Brighton striker Evan Ferguson has caused a club vs country row as Ireland have called him up for the international break. That’s despite AS Roma insisting he’s not fit.

Gazzetta dello Sport provide the information today. They report that Ferguson was reported injured by Roma. He is ‘in the pits’ at the Italian club after picking up an injury against Parma.

That’s another low point in what has been a miserable loan spell from Brighton so far. But that’s not stopped Ireland from calling him up for their games next week.

That cause ‘surprise’ at Roma, who clearly weren’t expecting it. They thought Ferguson would be left alone as he’s suffering from a ‘distorting trauma’ in his right ankle. He’s also only started one game in the last month and a half in Serie A.

He’s been unavailable to Gian Piero Gasperini, including tonight’s game against Rangers. But Ireland have seen no issue with calling him up for the games against Portugal and Hungary.

The Italian don’t consider Ferguson as ready. But it appears the Irish medical staff still want to do their own assessments. They’re even eyeing up a potential role in the second clash against Hungary.
