Liverpool youngster James McConnell shouldn’t be at Ajax and there’s no sign of why the Dutch giants signed him.

That’s according to journalist Valentijn Driessen. He’s targeted the Liverpool loanee for criticism in De Telegraaaf’s Kick-off podcast. His comments have been relayed by Soccer News.

McConnell is spending the season on loan at Ajax from Liverpool. The belief is that he was a specific request from manager John Heitinga. He knows the youngster well after working with him at Anfield last season.

The 21-year-old has been in and out of the side so far this season. He’s managed six appearances in all competitions, totalling 207 minutes. Two of those appearances have come in the Champions League, including 79 minutes in the 5-1 loss to Chelsea. That was one of two starts to date.

His latest appearance came in the 3-2 win over Twente on Sunday, in which he played 45 minutes before being substituted off.

Driessen was clearly watching that game and it seems he’s been left wondering why Ajax signed the Liverpool youngster in the first place.
