Liverpool have been cautioned by an injury specialist that Alexander Isak might require surgery to ward off future complications.

Isak is currently sidelined with a groin problem that ruled him out of last weekend's loss to Brentford in the Premier League.

The Reds signed Isak from Newcastle United on deadline day in a £125million deal. Since his arrival, the Sweden international has managed just one goal in eight outings, with his return date still uncertain.

Isak was withdrawn at the half-time during Liverpool's Champions League victory over Eintracht Frankfurt last week.

Arne Slot's side will face Crystal Palace in Wednesday night's Carabao Cup fourth-round tie before hosting Aston Villa at Anfield in the Premier League at the weekend, though Isak's availability for either fixture remains uncertain.
