Tottenham Hotspur have shown defensive vulnerabilities in recent games, an area which was their strength at the start of the season. Spurs were defeated 2-1 by Aston Villa last weekend, followed with a torrid performance in the goalless draw with AS Monaco in the Champions League. In both games, the defence came under severe pressure and lacked togetherness.

One figure who was missing in the last two games is Cristian Romero. The Spurs skipper suffered an adductor strain in the warm-up ahead of the Villa game, forcing him to sit out the fixture and the AS Monaco draw. The Argentinean’s injury is not deemed serious and he is already back on grass ahead of Tottenham’s trip to Everton, but it should worry Thomas Frank.

Tottenham lacks a quality back-up for Romero. Kevin Danso is decent but not up to the quality to fill in for a stretch of games both in the Premier League and Champions League. It is vital the Hotspur Way chiefs find one defender who can not only provide rest to Romero, but also challenge him for a starting berth in Frank’s XI.
