James Tavernier described the visitors’ display in Norway as a “disgrace” afterwards and it was impossible to argue with his assessment. The scale of the challenge which new manager Danny Rohl faces was laid bare to the German during the course of 90 lamentable minutes.

Yet, there was one moment in the Brann Stadium which gave Bears a glimmer of hope for the future.

When Rohl went over to speak to the travelling support following the final whistle he was, despite the inept performance he had presided over and the humiliating loss his charge had suffered, given a warm reception.

The former Sheffield Wednesday head coach, who climbed over the pitchside advertising hoardings and personally apologised to the furious red, white and blue-clad hordes for what they have just witnessed, showed that he is far more than an iPad-wielding Pep Guardiola wannabee with his unexpected gesture.
