Rangers and their advisory board have described the vandalising of a Walter Smith statue as ‘shameful’.

The club acknowledged the incident and said they’d referred it to the police who have also launched an enquiry.

The bronze statue of the late former manager was only erected in May last year, and images that circulated online appeared to show fire coming from the shoulder and foot sections.

Commenting on the scenes, the club said: “Rangers FC is aware of an incident at the Walter Smith statue last night, and strongly condemns this shameful behaviour.

“The matter has been reported to Police Scotland, and work is underway to ensure the site is cleaned and returned to good condition.”

The police have also released a statement revealing the statue had been damaged.
