Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner could have joined Ajax in 2023, much to the Dutch side’s disappointment now.

That’s according to Algemeen Dagblad, via Voetbal Primeur, who cover the Austrian coach today and how he could have ended up in the Netherlands.

The newspaper explains that the current Crystal Palace manager was ‘seriously considered’ to become Ajax’s new manager in 2023. Then technical director Sven Mislintat wanted to bring him to the club.

He, though, face opposition from the top. Ajax don’t often appoint foreign managers and the club wanted to look elsewhere after deciding not to continue with John Heitinga.

Concrete discussions never materialised, though, “because he (Mislintat) heard and felt resistance’ about working with a foreign boss. That was also due to the fact that the German had already been appointed, and the club were reluctant to hand over operations completely to ‘foreigners’.

They ultimately got their way and appointed Maurice Steijn. That didn’t work out and both he and Mislintat were removed from their positions not long afterwards.
