Tottenham Hotspur’s underwhelming season continued on Saturday with a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Spurs have been Manchester United’s bogie team in recent meetings, the highlight of which was the north London club’s Europa League final win last May. However, hopes of extending their six-game unbeaten league run against the Red Devils received a big blow when Cristian Romero was sent off in the 29th minute for a reckless challenge on Casemiro, and it went downhill for Tottenham from then.

Goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes in either half helped Man United deliver Thomas Frank’s side a 10th Premier League defeat of the season. Following the result at Old Trafford, Tottenham have dropped to 15th in the Premier League, carrying just a five-point gap to the relegation zone.

The Lilywhites do not have much time to lick their wounds as they come up against Newcastle United at home on Tuesday evening. The Magpies are not in great shape either of late, but having won five of their last seven games against Spurs, they will be slight favourites on paper.
