According to fresh reports from Argentina, Tottenham Hotspur has joined Atletico Madrid in the race to sign 21-year-old Argentinian centre back Lautaro Rivero from River Plate.

On October 16, Spurs had sent a scout to Argentina to monitor the player in live action. Rivero is currently protected by a €100m release clause in his contract, which extends until 2028. Even though neither club is willing to pay a transfer fee anywhere close to that, Tottenham could have a financial advantage over the Spanish outfit.

Rivero initially climbed the ranks at River Plate, emerging from their youth team. He then spent a loan spell at Central Córdoba before solidifying his place in River Plate’s team. He was called up to the national team due to his impressive display. He has scored 2 goals and provided one assist in the 2025 Apertura season.

Atletico has faced problems in their defense this season. With long-serving center back Jose Maria Gimenez suffering from injuries and Clement Lenglet failing to perform consistently, they are believed to be in the market for a new center back to reinforce their back line.
