Benfica have been criticised after making Nicolas Otamendi a scapegoat for their 3-0 loss to Newcastle United.

Commentator, and Benfica fan, José Calado, does the criticising today. His comments have been relayed by Glorioso 1904.

Benfica were beaten comfortably at St James Park on Tuesday evening. Goals from Anthony Gordon and a double from Harvey Barnes sealed a 3-0 win. It was a dominant performance from the Magpies in which they dominated the stats as well.

The drama has been non-stop for Benfica since. Jose Mourinho has already been raked over the coals for previous comments about the strength of the Benfica squad. They’ve blown up in his face after such a weak performance from his side.

Now the criticism is being aimed at Otamendi. He refused to attend a ‘flash’ interview after the game. This was later confirmed to journalists by an unnamed Benfica ‘source’.

That, for some, was seen as unacceptable given he is Benfica’s captain. It seems most believe he should have been fronting up the cameras after the defeat to Newcastle. Calado, though, believes he is simply being used as the scapegoat.
