Liverpool’s Alexander Isak managed a goal and an assist in Sweden’s 5-1 friendly win over Norther Ireland in March. Since then, he’s failed to score or register an assist for the national team.

Sweden have failed to win any of their four World Cup qualifier fixtures. The striker hasn’t been able to impress for his country in the last two international breaks.

Following their latest defeats to Switzerland and Kosovo, Jon Dahl Tomasson was shown the exit door.

Journalist Olof Lundh, writing in his column for Fotbollskanalen, looks at several reasons for Sweden’s poor displays. He’s critical of the Liverpool player and accuses him of prioritising own future over the national team.

On summer deadline day, the 26-year-old arrived at Anfield from Newcastle United. He had to force a move to Liverpool, partly by refusing to go on a pre-season trip and train. This meant Isak didn’t have sufficient preparation for this season.

This impacted his form for Liverpool, where he’s yet to score in the league after four matches. Arsenal summer signing Viktor Gyökeres has also failed to impress for Sweden.
