Arne Slot needs to teach Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk to be the ‘leader’ of his team, and the Netherlands.

That’s according to Marco van Basten. He’s been commenting in the Liverpool star on Ziggo Sport, relayed by Voetbal Primeur. The Dutch icon believes their current captain still has a lot to learn.

Van Dijk has been a key player for the Netherlands again this week, captaining Ronald Koeman’s side in 4-0 wins over Malta and Finland.

He was named Netherlands captain by Koeman all the way back in 2018 following Arjen Robben’s international retirement. He’s been captain ever since and added the Liverpool captaincy to his arm in 2023 as well.

It’s an easy role to give the defender, who has established himself as one of the best in the world over the last decade. He has the personal and club accolades to attest to that as well. Indeed, some, particularly Liverpool fans, would argue he’s the best defender of all time.

Van Basten is a fan of the Liverpool captain but believes Arne Slot needs to teach him one more thing to add to his repertoire.
