Sherring headed Town in front in the 87th minute with their only effort on target in the game at Priestfield Stadium.

However, Elliott Nevitt's 95th-minute equaliser denied them consecutive wins and clean sheets following a 2-0 home victory over Fleetwood Town in Cotterill's first game back in charge.

"We probably would have taken a point before the game, but the circumstances make it less enjoyable," said Sherring, on loan for the season from MK Dons.

"[Cotterill's] given us a load of detail, which is really good. We probably needed that because it was a bit of a difficult situation, but we've got clarity now.

"We know what he wants and it's down to us to do it on the pitch."

Former Bournemouth and Northampton Town centre-back Sherring has formed a partnership with ex-Wales international James Wilson, who is 11 years his senior at 36.

"I really enjoy playing with him," said Sherring. "We get on really well off the pitch as well. We've got a really tight-knit group - everyone gets on well. It's a family culture and we're close."
