Sunderland are reported to be interested in a January double swoop involving another multi-million pound outlay.

Having shelled out a whopping £150m minimum in the summer – their net spend estimated to be around £100m – the club are ready to spend another £55m if reports in Italy are to be believed.

The Wearsiders’ January transfer plans could include defensive reinforcements, as a new suggestion that the Black Cats are still interested in signing Jhon Lucumi from Bologna, while Liverpool’s Joe Gomez could be another target.

According to Quotidiano Sportivo, Sunderland are prepared to reignite their pursuit of Lucumí after failing to sign him in the summer and that is despite signing big on defenders.

The Premier League newcomers were previously willing to pay £25.5million and offer a contract worth £2.55million per year.Bologna resisted the temptation to sell and stood firm at the time, choosing to keep hold of the Colombian defender.

Lucumi’s current deal runs until 2027 and the club are reportedly pushing for him to sign an improved deal.
