Edson Álvarez may be regretting leaving West Ham United this summer, as Nuno Espirito Santos’ arrival could have been good for him.

That’s according to AS, the Mexican edition, who cover the player today and ‘what could have been’ for him.

They explain that he left England in search of opportunities this summer. He departed West Ham for Fenerbahce after falling out of favour under Graham Potter.

Part of the allure for the move was also the chance to work under Jose Mourinho. But he has now left the Turkish side and moved to Benfica.

And Potter has also departed West Ham. He’s been replaced by a manager who ‘provides the most opportunities to Mexicans’, Nuno Espirito Santo. That’s led to something of a ‘what if’ line of thinking from AS.

The newspaper questions what might have been if Álvarez had just ‘held on a little longer’. The feeling is that his chances of getting back into the West Ham team would have been greater under Espirito Santo.
