Arsenal should not target a summer transfer move for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.

That is the blunt view of former Gunners favourite Anders Limpar who believes the Italian international midfielder would be Arsenal's fifth choice midfielder if he made a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Tonali was linked with a sensational transfer deadline day move to North London in January but Newcastle had no intention of selling one of their star players.

That resolve could be tested if, as expected, Newcastle don't have Champions League football next season and it could see Arsenal return to make a move for the former AC Milan star.

But despite Tonali being dubbed as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League by the likes of Manchester United great Paul Scholes, Limpar believes Tonali would be behind the likes of Christian Norgaard and Mikel Merino in the pecking order if he joined Mikel Arteta's side.
