Newcastle United's transfer interest in Watford forward Mamadou Doumbia remains in place as the winter window nears a close - but they have been warned against a deal just yet.

Doumbia, a Mali international, has sprung to prominence over the last 12 months after joining Watford from AS Black Stars.

The striker is only 19 but has been asked to lead the line by Javi Gracia this season as well as play as a second striker. His performances have attracted interest from the likes of Crystal Palace and Burnley, who are believed to have had a £10million bid for the forward rejected in the summer.

Newcastle have scouted Doumbia regularly and reports last month claimed they were in pole position to sign the youngster, although the Magpies are unlikely to make any serious moves this transfer window and instead will keep their powder dry ahead of another potentially important summer spend.
