Newcastle United have rubbished claims that Arsenal have made a deadline day move to sign midfielder Sandro Tonali.

A report from Sky in Germany claimed the Gunners were keen to make a late move for the Italian international after Mikel Merino picked up an injury but sources at Newcastle claimed there was no truth to those suggestions.

Nonetheless, it should focus minds at Newcastle over the next steps when it comes to Tonali's future. It was revealed back in October Tonali had signed an extension to his contract until the summer of 2029 with Newcastle having an option to extend that by a further year.

That obviously puts Newcastle in a strong position when it comes to the 25-year-old's future and despite a recent drop-off in performances, he remains one of Newcastle's most important players.
