The Blues head to the north east on the back of back-to-back defeats, which have left them sitting 15th in the table and just four points clear of the relegation places.

Sunderland, in contrast, are flying. This season's surprise package have taken 17 points from a possible 27 so far and victory tonight would move them up to second and within five points of leaders Arsenal.

Everton are determined not to let that happen and if they can show their greater experience and hopefully class, and record a much-needed win, it would go a long way to get what was a promising start to the campaign back on track.
