Watford defender Formose Mendy has admitted he was delighted to see teammate Othman Maamma enjoy success at the U20 World Cup.

Morocco won the U-20 World Cup last month in Chile. They finished first in their group, securing wins over Spain and Brazil to progress. Victories over South Korea, the United States and France followed before defeating Argentina in the final.

They are only the second African side to win it, after Ghana’s success in 2009. And Watford’s Maamma was the standout player.

He was handed the Golden Ball for his performances, being named the best player in the tournament following Morocco’s success.

It was a big moment for the Watford man and his nation, who have invested significantly in their youth development programmes in recent years. That has helped them to produce players like Maamma, who is now shining on the international stage.

Mendy was delighted for him, admitting he was in contact throughout the tournament and sees his teammates success as one for the whole of Africa.

“Yes, we talked via text,” he said.
