Jurgen Klopp showed no mercy at Liverpool - with Mamadou Sakho experiencing this ruthless approach first-hand after being frozen out of the squad. The French defender arrived at the Premier League club in 2013 following an £18million move from Paris Saint-Germain and nearly secured the league crown under Brendan Rodgers during his inaugural campaign.

It was two-and-a-half years later that the Northern Irishman received his marching orders with Klopp being named as his successor. Sakho had penned a fresh long-term contract at Liverpool just one month prior to the German's appointment and appeared destined to feature prominently in Klopp's overhaul of the squad, or so he believed.

It was during the subsequent summer in Klopp's maiden pre-season with Liverpool that marked the start of Sakho's downfall after he was dispatched home from a tour in the United States. The centre-back was alleged to have arrived late for a flight, a team dinner and a treatment appointment.
