Former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick felt there needed to be more contact inside the penalty area for referee Tim Robinson to award Brentford a spot kick against Brentford.

Liverpool's defeat to the Bees was littered with controversial refereeing decisions. Dango Outtara had given the hosts the lead inside just five minutes before Cody Gakpo saw penalty appeals waved away at the Gtech Community Stadium, just a minute before Kevin Schade put Keith Andrews' side two goals to the good.

Milos Kerkez pulled one back before the interval to set up a dramatic second-half, with match referee Simon Hooper replaced by Robinson during the break after sustaining an injury in the first-half. The replacement official initially awarded Brentford a free-kick on the edge of the area following a challenge from Virgil van Dijk on Dango Outtara.
