Virgil van Dijk had another game to forget in a Liverpool shirt.

The problems persist for the Reds as despite picking up a win midweek against Eintracht Frankfurt, they returned to losing ways with a 3-2 defeat to Brentford.

The performance as a whole was, yet again, far from convincing, with only Dominik Szoboszlai really able to hold his head up high.

Van Dijk was just one player who struggled massively throughout, with the Dutchman unable to lead his team back onto the right path.

As well as this, he is closing in on a record held by Jamie Carragher, with this another one which no player will want.

With the game at 2-1 and still in the balance, even if Brentford were dominating, Liverpool just needed to steady the ship and do nothing silly so they could get back into it.

Van Dijk, however, had other ideas, and his rather silly and late challenge led to the referee giving a free-kick, only for it to be upgraded to a penalty when it was confirmed the contact was actually inside the box.
