Florian Wirtz's Liverpool career finally achieved lift-off on Wednesday evening as the German star bagged two assists in the Reds' 5-1 rout of Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League. The former Bayer Leverkusen ace had been under intense scrutiny since joining for £116million in the summer.

Prior to Wednesday night in Frankfurt, Wirtz had registered just one assist, which came in Liverpool's Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace. However, Liverpool's No. 7 had an inspired second-half performance in Germany to finally banish the monkey off his back.

Goals from former Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitke, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai ensured Arne Slot won his first game in four and steered the Reds clear of a full-blown crisis. After the game, German media were quick to praise Wirtz, 22, whose brief smile in his post-match media duties said it all.
