Mikel Merino’s magnificent scoring record in 2025 continued against Bulgaria as the Arsenal forward netted a brace for Spain.

The 29-year-old has now scored 18 goals in this calendar year after finding the back of the net twice in Spain’s 4-0 win in World Cup qualifying against Bulgaria.

Despite question marks over where he fits into Mikel Arteta’s team, the Arsenal attacker’s goalscoring record cannot be argued with.

Merino was not the only player who impressed on the night, with Martin Zubimendi also producing a strong display for La Roja.

Mikel Merino is actually becoming a key player for Luis de la Fuente’s team, having now scored six goals in four World Cup qualifying matches.

The midfielder has contributed to almost 50 per cent of Spain’s goals in the World Cup Qualifiers so far, which is higher than any other player.

For his first goal, Merino found himself in a great position and headed home with an impressive header from Robin Le Normand’s flick on. His second goal was also another header, as he towered over the Bulgarian defence.
