Liverpool fans were not surprised to see Caoimhin Kelleher demonstrate his penalty-saving abilities on Saturday evening.

The Irishman forged a reputation as one the best around from 12 yards during his time with the Reds.

Kelleher saved memorably from Kylian Mbappe during last season’s Champions League campaign and thwarted another big name on Saturday, adding Cristiano Ronaldo to an ever-growing list.

It was a brilliant stop from the former Liverpool goalkeeper. Ronaldo must have thought he was safe by going down the middle, but Kelleher somehow flicked his leg up to kick the ball away after diving to his left.

Given Alisson Becker’s current injury absence, it was another reminder for Liverpool supporters about what a good goalie their former number two is.

And as they watched the now Brentford man celebrate another terrific save, fans could not help but hark back to a time last season when Arne Slot really could have used him.

If there is one criticism of Alisson’s abilities as a goalkeeper, it is that he is not quite as good at saving penalties as he could be.
