Chairman Steve Parish has claimed Crystal Palace's maiden season in Europe was the reason for pulling the plug on captain Marc Guehi's dream move to Liverpool. The Premier League champions had agreed a deal worth £35m with Palace on transfer deadline day for the England international.

The centre-back was given permission to undergo his medical in London on September 1. However, the Eagles' attempts to replace their skipper fell through when Brighton & Hove Albion's Igor Julio chose a loan move to West Ham United over a switch to Selhurst Park.

Reports also emerged on the night that head coach Oliver Glasner, who was desperate to keep Guehi, had threatened to leave had the talisman not stayed in south London.
