Former Liverpool defender Martin Kelly has announced his retirement from football following a 15-year playing career.

Kelly came through the youth teams at Anfield, going on to make 62 appearances for the Reds.

A tall defender capable of playing centrally, most of the 35-year-old’s matches for Liverpool came at right-back.

Breaking through during Rafa Benitez’s time as Liverpool manager, the bulk of Kelly’s appearances came during the forgettable 2010/11 and 2011/12 campaigns.

During that time, the Liverpool squad was nothing like the one we now know 15 years later.

Still, Kelly played with some excellent footballers during his six years in the Reds first team, and has now claimed that one of them in particular resembled France legend Zinedine Zidane.

Although Liverpool were struggling to be competitive at the top end of the Premier League during the early 2010s, they arguably should have been doing better.

Players like Luis Suarez and Jordan Henderson were key, while Kelly himself was being largely kept out by one of the best right-backs in the country: Glen Johnson.
