Sunderland’s summer pursuit of Jhon Lucumí was one their big ones that got away, and the case is still unfolding in Italy. 

After weeks of negotiations and public statements from his agent, the Colombian defender stayed at Bologna, despite a reported €28m offer from the newly promoted side.

Now, as reported by AS Colombia, Bologna have “surrendered” and are waiting for the player’s decision on a new contract. Giovanni Sartori, the club’s sporting director, told Italian newspaper La Repubblica that talks are ongoing and the final word belongs to Lucumí.

“We are talking to him about a contract renewal and we would be delighted if he stayed. I don’t know what he thinks, you should ask him. We’ll meet again later and he’ll tell us what he’s decided,” Sartori said.

According to the report, Bologna have offered Lucumí a deal worth around €2m per year with improved terms. The 27-year-old recently reached 100 Serie A appearances and has been a constant starter since joining in 2022.
