On Tuesday evening, we take a break from our EFL League One campaign, travelling to Cambridge United to continue our Vertu Trophy campaign.

Ater beating Barnet, 4-1, in our first game in the competition, a win away to Cambridge United would go a long way to ensuring the Hatters qualify for the knockout stages.

Ahead of the game, I thought I’d revisit the original article I published in our – they-played-for-both-series – which appeared on our front page back in January 2022.

The starting XI I agreed upon, some three and a half years ago, is reproduced below:

Goalkeeper – Kevin Pilkington

Defender – Simon Ainge
Defender – John Dreyer
Defender – Dan Gleeson
Defender – Jamie Campbell

Midfielder – Matthew Barnes-Homer
Midfielder – Luke Berry
Midfielder – David Preece
Midfielder – Keith Keane

Forward – Steve Claridge
Forward – Scott Oakes

Substitute – Rossi Jarvis

But since that day, one of the icons of our history, when it comes to those who have played for us, left Kenilworth Road, to join Cambridge United, Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu.

There may be others who fit the criteria as well, but until I can receive some prompting from the readership, my ultimate XI (plus substitute), now looks as thus:
