Brighton and Hove Albion summer signing Maxim De Cuyper has admitted that he didn’t’ expect to be first choice at left-back this season.

Het Laatste Nieuws have an interview with eh defender today, in which he admits he’s had to work hard to adapt to life in England.

The 24-year-old joined Brighton in a €20m deal this summer after impressing with the Belgian side, particularly in the Champions League.

He initially arrived as an alternative to Pervis Estupinan, joining Brighton on July 5th. However, 19 days later, the Ecuadorian had departed, joining AC Milan in a €17m deal.

That’s left De Cuyper as the first choice under Fabian Hurzeler, something the defender admits he hadn’t expected.

“I didn’t expect to start the season anyway. When I arrived here, there were still quite a few full backs,” he said.

“Two weeks before the start of the season, I became the number one left-back. I thought: ‘Hey, maybe it’s really possible,’”.
