Robin Olsen perhaps envisioned an easier life when he left Aston Villa for Malmo in the summer transfer window. Instead, it’s all national drama in Sweden.

For those that don’t know, the former Aston Villa goalkeeper has retired from international football for Sweden. But rather than a dignified exit, he’s caused a storm.

He openly criticised national team manager Jon Dahl Tomasson with a public statement, insisting he’d never play for him again. That’s caused plenty of attention, and not all positive if the latest comments from Mikael Lustig, via Tipsbladet, are to go by.

He’s now a pundit for STV after retiring and, having played with Olsen throughout their international careers, well placed to comment on this week’s drama.

And it seems rather than defending his former teammate, he was left cringing and thinking the former Aston Villa man has judged things badly.

“When I saw the headlines, I thought: “No, Robin – don’t do this,” he said.

He, though, can see where his former teammate may be coming from, given he’s in the latter stages of his career at 35-years-old.
