Chelsea make 'transfer approach' for Newcastle target Hugo Ekitike as asking price set

Chelsea could force Newcastle to change their ambitious transfer plans by making an approach for their striker target Hugo Ekitike. The Blues are reportedly ready to make a move for the Stade Reims wonderkid, who has also attracted interest from other Premier League clubs including Tottenham and Arsenal.

Thomas Tuchel is not short of attacking options after signing Romelu Lukaku this summer but the Belgian’s long-term Stamford Bridge future is already uncertain and Ekitike has been identified as one of Europe’s hottest prospects.

Ekitike, 19, is the latest exciting young French striker coming through the ranks and has been given inevitable comparisons with Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe for his performances in Ligue 1.

The France U20 international has eight goals in 10 league starts this season, making him the top teenage scorer across all of Europe’s top five leagues.

Ekitike’s form has unsurprisingly yielded interest from potential suitors who want to snap up his services before his price rises exponentially.

Newcastle’s new Saudi-led ownership are desperate to avoid relegation and have signalled their intent to invest heavily before the end of the January transfer window.

The Magpies have already signed Chris Wood from relegation rivals Burnley for £25m and want to add Ekitike to their squad.

The forward is valued at a similar price to Wood and the Daily Mail report that Ekitike would be open to a move to Tyneside.

However, Foot Mercato are now reporting that an official approach has been made by Chelsea for the youngster.

The Blues are said to be interested in signing Ekitike in the summer, but will not be short of competition from the Premier League and beyond to secure his services.
