Motorists got a jolt from more than their morning coffee Thursday morning as the pump price for gasoline jumped sharply across eastern Canada.

In Montreal, numerous gas stations were posting prices of $1.90 to $1.92 for a litre of regular, up from the $1.75 posted just days before.

A 15-cents-a-litre hike was also observed in other municipalities across Quebec. But Quebec was not alone in seeing gas prices shoot up. In Ontario, a litre of regular jumped from $1.66 on Wednesday to $1.80 on Thursday.

According to analyst Dan McTeague of gaswizard.ca, Thursday’s prices represent a two-year high for eastern Canada. McTeague, who closely monitors fluctuations in gas prices, predicts that pump prices in Quebec and Ontario should drop by about four cents a litre by Friday.
