Manchester United are reportedly keen on making a move for Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn.

According to The Telegraph, United have put McGinn 's name on a list of potential targets for the summer when they hope to have a new manager in charge.

Ralf Rangnick is the Red Devils' interim boss having replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last year and the club are looking to the end of the season for a reboot.

McGinn has been linked with United before, when Villa were promoted back to the Premier League in 2019 with the Scot playing a key part in Dean Smith's side's return to the top flight.

He signed a new contract in December 2020 with three-and-a-half years left on his deal and McGinn has proven himself to be a key player for Steven Gerrard, who has spoken highly of the player since he arrived at Villa in November.

"I love John, I love the person, the character, the player," Gerrard said.

"I’m the lucky one that's able to work with him and try to improve his game."

McGinn was mentioned as a potential transfer target for United before Christmas and Rangnick was quizzed on his thoughts on the player.

"My opinion on winter transfers is clear," Rangnick said.

"It needs to be a player that improves the whole team.

"It needs to be a high quality player, no matter what area of the pitch.

"If it’s a midfielder or whatever it is, it needs to be a player that really helps us to get better.

"On the other hand it needs to be a player that can perhaps move in the winter, then discussions can begin to be made.

"But only then if those two things come together will it serve us well."

McGinn has appeared 129 times for Villa, scoring 16 times and registering 21 assists for the club with the £3.5million signing from Hibernian in 2018 proving to be one of the best signings in recent history.
