Danny Mills has questioned whether Liverpool’s interest in Raphinha will lead to a formal bid to Leeds United.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Whites and England defender admitted he would take Raphinha’s agent’s recent comments with “a pinch of salt”.
Former Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder Deco represents Raphinha.
He told Brazilian outlet Globo Liverpool “like” his client but there has not yet been a formal approach.
A Liverpool source had told Football Insider (October 13) 24 hours earlier the club are keeping tabs on Raphinha and his Leeds teammates Kalvin Phillips and Illan Meslier.
Asked for his assessment of Deco’s comments, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I always take it with a pinch of salt when the agent confirms Liverpool were interested.
“He’s a good player. Liverpool will be interested in every good player in the Premier League and around the world.
“That level of interest would be ‘If he was available would you like him?’ ‘Yes’. All of a sudden you’ve got a story.
“He’s a fantastic talent, and give him away for nothing, and every team in the Premier League would want him.
“It’s a bit like when managers rule themselves out of jobs they haven’t been offered.
“He’s a very, very good player, we know that. If he keeps improving then yes, of course, other clubs are going to be interested. Until that happens it’s irrelevant.”
Raphinha is under contract at Elland Road until the summer of 2025 after he penned a five-year deal last year.
The 24-year-old has scored nine times and provided nine assists in 37 Premier League games for the Yorkshire giants.
In other news, Kieran Maguire has been left ‘amazed’ by a Phil Hay update on a ‘record-breaking’ Leeds United deal.
