Across State Lines: Sunil Chhetri Retires

One of the last remaining Kansas City Wizards that was playing professional soccer has called time on his career as Sunil Chhetri this past week announced that he was retiring. Chhetri is India’s all time leader in caps and goals was signed by Kansas City ahead of the 2010 season. Chhetri only made one competitive appearance for Kansas City in a US Open Cup qualifier against the Colorado Rapids, a game played at Durwood Soccer Stadium on UMKC’s campus. He did also appear for Kansas City in the Wizards 2-1 win over Manchester United. The next day it was announced that Kansas City was loaning Chhetri to the Indian national team as they prepared for the 2011 AFC Asian Cup. It was announced in February of 2011 after the Asian Cup that Chhetri was no longer with Kansas City. Chhetri spent more time playing in India before a short stint in Portugal with Sporting CP B before spending the rest of his career in his native India.

Chhetri’s retirement leaves just three players who wore KC Wizards jerseys playing professionally at this time; Teal Bunbury with Nashville SC, Kei Kamara with Los Angeles FC, and Igor Kostrov with Neman Grodno in Belarus.

In other news this week, KC native Felicia Knox has a new team. After being drafted by Angel City FC, but not signed, Knox has signed with USL Super League side, Fort Lauderdale United.

Here’s the rest of this week’s update.
