Former Liverpool man Glen Johnson has sprung to the defence of midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai who was involved in a heated confrontation with fans after the Reds' dismal 4-0 FA Cup defeat at Manchester City.

The 25-year-old went over to the travelling supporters at the end of Saturday's quarter-final humiliation at the Etihad Stadium, and appeared frustrated by the reception.

He was seen shrugging his shoulders and waving his arms at fans - a reaction which did not go down well - before team-mate Federico Chiesa helped him move away.

After the game Szoboszlai was critical of himself and his team-mates, saying: 'The mentality wasn't there enough. None of us were there to be honest as much as we could. It's a hard time but we have to stick together. On Wednesday, there is another chance but we have to get in our head this is not the season we would like to end.'
