Newcastle United defender Matt Targett has confirmed that his time at St James’ Park has come to an end, admitting that his “chapter at the club is closed” as he focuses on a permanent future elsewhere.

The 30-year-old left-back, who is currently flourishing on a season-long loan at promotion-chasing Middlesbrough, spoke candidly about his situation following a string of impressive performances in the Championship.

After two injury-plagued years on Tyneside, Targett has successfully revitalised his career at the Riverside Stadium.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Targett revealed that a conversation with Magpies boss Eddie Howe in January paved the way for his permanent departure.

Despite having a contract that runs until June 2027, both parties appear to have reached a mutual understanding that a return to the Newcastle first team is unlikely.
